from the british isles
with rachel goodwin - duo mad tom (rachel and hervé dréan) (courses, workshops and keilis of english and welsh dances). ceilidh dances are the modern version of the english country dances of john playford or cecil sharp -they are great-spirited, group dances, using different combinations of sets and figures - we now use the word "keili" in breton-french spelling to denote the irish "céili" or scottish/english "ceilidh", which are difficult to pronounce in french.
see also : florida ceilidh band for their ceilidhs and the excellent webfeet site which lists everything that's going on in the ceilidh world in the uk
to learn or perfect keili dances if you happen to live in or be passing through brittany:
a totally free workshop is run on the first wednesday of every month from october to june by rachel goodwin. this happens in the salle richelieu in la roche-bernard, on the coast in southern brittany, between vannes and nantes. the workshops start at 8pm with steps and figures for beginners then at 8.30 we go on to more complicated dances. all are welcome at any time. we especially welcome passing british ceilidh dancers who can come and join in, show off their expertise, or just come to have a good time !

watch the video - extracts from a keili dance workshop in Férel, southern Brittany, in April 2007. The film is quite compressed (only 4.5Mo , so the quality isn't wonderful, but it will give you an idea of the sort of dances we teach. We never use recorded music, we play ourselves for all the workshops.

welsh
with twm twp : the specifically welsh versions of keili dances, although of course being very close to the english tradition, do have typically welsh subtleties, and a whole stock of genuine welsh tunes to draw on. welsh music is hardly known at all in france, but we're working on it!
twm twp proposes courses and workshops as well as keilis, and often also plays keili sets in the middle of a breton fest noz, or a french bal folk. these go down really well now as most dancers are pleased to discover new styles, and are amazed how much fun it is !

Musique Sauvage also organises its own keili-fest noz two or three times a year, and they have all been a great success up to now.
The last one was a keili-bal folk in st dolay, just north of la roche-bernard, on 2nd April 2011 with the duo philippe plard who were really excellent and it made a great change to have such a varied programme of dances so deep into Brittany ! Before that was the 2011 Big Keili on Sat 29th January with hélène fournier from Quebec, teaching the Quebec versions of ceilidh dances, square dances, cotillons etc, accompanied by audrey le jossec (melodeon) and pierrick lemou (violin). Great time had by all.
In 2010 we had great fun with the brilliant english ceilidh band stömp in their accoustic version with the callers sheena masson and liam robinson. there was a saturday afternoon workshop with sheena and liam both teaching a range of english ceilidh dances, followed by a meal of traditional english specialities and the evening ceilidh with stömp, liam robinson and the duo mad tom who played and called their own brand of english ceildh dances interspersed with breton dances from the region of la roche-bernard with toure louis.
Don't miss the next Big Keili on 28th Jan 2012 : Contra Dances - the american version of ceilidh dances, led by caller Rhodri Davies and the groupe Stick Shift.
More details here very soon !
past programmes have included english, welsh and irish keili workshops, and among the many groups invited have been : florida, twm twp, bombizou, vincent blin et gilles poutoux, the lovely clampins, emily hawkes et hélène brunet, mike james, R3G, les muziciens d'oz, reels galore, ronan paitier, martyn harvey, musiqu'à deux...
we think it's very important to support local producers of organic beers, cider and fruit juices - so you won't find anything else in our bars
